What is an Air Handling Unit (AHU)?

An air handling unit, commonly known as an AHU, is a system that manages the proper ventilation of indoor air in a building. It is typically installed on the roof of a building and through ducts, the air is circulated to reach each room. The main functions of an AHU include filtration and control of air quality, temperature regulation, and relative humidity monitoring.

Applications of AHUs

AHUs are suitable for large spaces where the flow of people is high and natural ventilation is limited such as hotel dining rooms, function rooms, restaurants, convention halls, and more. They are also ideal for spaces with high hygiene requirements such as laboratories, clean rooms, and operating theaters.
Components of an AHU
  • Air Intake: Collects air from outside or recycles indoor air
  • Filter: Filters air to remove particles, viruses, bacteria, odors, and other air pollutants
  • Fan: Powers the air to distribute it throughout the rooms
  • Heat Exchanger: Transfers temperature between coolant and air
  • Cooling Coil: Cools the air passing through the module
  • Silencer Plenums: Homogenizes the air flow in empty spaces.

Energy Efficiency of AHUs

The ultimate goal of an AHU is energy efficiency and this is mandatory by the European Ecodesign Regulation 1235/2014. The AHU reduces energy consumption by having heat recovery units and variable regulation of equipment. The heat recovery units reduce the energy required in air conditioning by mixing indoor and outdoor air, reducing the temperature contrast, and therefore, energy consumption. The variable regulation of equipment means that the fans work according to flow rate needs, reducing their consumption.
